I've phoned Academy Sports today, and been told that their open nets commence on Sunday 27 January 18.00 - 20.00.

This posting above is incorrect unfortunantly. This 6-8 Sunday session is reserved by Carton CC and is not a Academy Sports Open Nets session. I went to see Robin, the Sports Centre manager today (an old pal of the Beast incidently) and he says there has been heavy demand from the clubs (including Carlton, Corstorphine, an Edin South "consortium") which has taken the majority of the available free slots in the Hall. However..... there were a few 1 hour slots in the hall still free.... so following some gentle persuasion, he has booked these as Open sessions. These are:-
Sunday 27 January - 5-6pm Sunday 3 February - 5-6pm Sunday 10 February - 5-6pm Sunday 17 February - 5-6pm Obviously those using these sessions will need to be very organised in terms of time-keeping and rotation of batsman!! No doubt there will be a small charge to be paid at the Centre reception (I forgot to ask how much! will check.)
It would be disappointing if these Clubs, having booked up the whole Hall for their dedicated Club nets, then only use half of the available net lanes. And that applies to us too - we have already been approached by another club regarding possibly sharing our sessions.
So a reminder that our Club specific Indoor Nets start on Saturday 26th Jan from 1-3pm at Academy Sports, Arboretum Rd. Nets are free to members so bring your subs cash or cheque for £60 (waged member) £30 (student/unwaged). £3 charge if non-member. Full details of dates are on our main website News page.

Can't wait for nets - inspired as I am by reading two excellent cricket books: Penguins Stopped Play by Harry Thompson and the Zimmer Men by Marcus Berkmann. The first covers a world tour by a team called the Capt Scott XI - hilarious to anyone who has ever been on, or worse still organised, a cricket tour. The second follows an ageing team called the Rain Men - a less competitive offshoot of the Scotts - and is mainly about the insanity of cricket. It's a sequel to another book by Berkmann (called Rain Men, funnily enough).
