Mufs 2 Comprehensively outplay Broomhall as Sorrell goes large.
A victory by nearly 100 runs in an away fixture over the water in Fife gives Mufs 2’s a deserved 20 points.
Batting first in surprisingly sunny conditions, Mufs set off at a rollicking rate with the first wicket of Sorrell and Anjum putting on 60 by the 9th over, before Nadeem fell for a fine 21, featuring 4 boundaries.
Sorrell continued to punish anything short or full from the Broomhall bowlers was joined first by Bashir and then Hawkins who both looked completely untroubled before falling to leading edges to balls that climbed steeply off a length.
Pete Bisset, debuting for the 2’s found some of the bowling to his liking hitting a couple of beautiful boundaries before first being clobbered on the helmet, again a good length ball rearing up, before being bowled at the other end by the crafty dibbly dobbler Smith.
With the 100 brought up by the 22nd over and the first of 2 breaks for rain, Mufs were reasonably well set for a 200+ score, however with recent collapses in mind Lacey and Sorrell reigned back the scoring against the Broomhall bowlers but still managed to bring up the 150 n the 33 over. Dibbler Dobbler Smith snared Lacey for a belligerent 7 to be replaced by the enigmatic Towns who cajoled the now tiring Sorrell for the only run 3 of the game. Sorrell was starting to open his shoulders again and sailed through the 90’s and on to his century in quick time when change bowler Ali bizarrely tried a round the wicket attack with no protection in the cow corner region. The beast devoured him yum yum.
Towns departed for only the 3rd double figure score of the innings (10) with Baikie coming in after an early tea to face the hostile left arm youngster Ward. Norm, Tas and Govind all struggled to put bat on ball to Ward and the returning opening bowler Hoefling who was refinding his radar after being earlier smashed by Sorrell. Indeed Sorrell who should have been seeing the ball like a football was also finding ward extremely difficult to get away. His short pitched length allied to the unpredictable bounce of the pitch was certainly a tough examination.
The innings ended with Ward bowling the final, Sorrell connecting with a big straight drive catching the trees behind the bowler ¾ the way up. A fine way to end an innings of 125 Not Out. Mufs finish on 209-9, batting out our overs for the first time in a while!
Taseen opened for Mufs and as usual bowled with an immaculate line and length. The Broomhall team who undoubtedly wanted to emulate Mufs quick start were kept very quiet. Govind complementing Tas well by bowling an extremely tight line was also finding some extravagant “cut”, earning compliments from the Umpire if not any positive LBW decisions!
Broomhall begin to dip under the required run rate, not helped by a continual fall of wickets. Tas and Govind both picking up one wicket each in their opening spells, when they probably deserver more. Change bowler Baikie responded to a very loose loosner caught n bowled the dangerous Chalmers to leave Broomhall 38-3 from 15 overs.
From there on, it was the Makesh Sunkari show. Bowling the Broomhall top scoring opener and then running through the middle order to finish with 5-23 was a top class effort. Aided and abetted by a running catch from Sorrell and smart caught and bowled, Makesh used the facilities expertly and was at times unplayable, well by the Broomhall batsman anyway! Shame the towering 6 near the end of the spell put an end to his chance of a “Got Him” trophy, for this week anyway.
Sorrell had time to pick up a wicket cleaning bowling Ali who had a really bad day at the hands of the beast and Tas came back to pick up his 2nd wicket.
However it was Makesh with the plaudits as he finished off Broomhall for a paltry 120 in 33 overs.
As good as the bowlers were, the fielders were equally impressive, lead by Mouris who was absolutely electric wherever the captain put him, inspiring the rest of his teammates and energising the bowlers with his effort in the field. No dropped catches and a fine display behind the wicket by Lindsay Towns was a good team performance by the Mufs.
Complimentary tinnies from the very sociable Broomhall team completed a fine day, all seemed to be looking forward to the return next week.
