HAPLESS MDAFS VANQUISHED BY UNSTOPPABLE MDAFS
Murrayfield DAFS were last night celebrating a comfortable pre-season victory over a below-par Murrayfield DAFS side. While Murrayfield DAFS will surely approach the league season with confidence after outplaying their hotly-tipped opponents, Murrayfield DAFS by contrast will have to take a long, hard look at themselves and work out where it all went wrong.
To avoid any possible confusion, I'd better alter the terminology a little for the remainder of this report. The match, as you might have gathered, was an intra-club affair at Roseburn, with teams selected on the day and captained by Anand “Batman” Venkatesh and Neil “N-Dogg” Yelland respectively. We had an impressive turnout of Muffers old and new, meaning that we were able to have a 13-a-side, (theoretically) 50 overs a side game, with a system of rolling subs allowing Shielsy to spend the majority of the day drinking tea and plaiting his magnificent beard.
Batman's Braves won the toss and elected to bat on a breezy but sunny day, and were quickly reduced to 19 for 3 by some accurate bowling from Somanna and Finn. Sam then played beautifully to reach 30 in about a minute and a half, before retiring and allowing Al (30) to take over the role of Chief Biffer, patting back the straight ones and depositing everything else over deep midwicket.
The rest of the middle and lower order helped Batmanshire to a competitive score, with Neeraj batting skilfully and sensibly for 25, and double-figure scores from Sunny (11), Gurjeet (12) and Fothers (a charismatic 12, notable for his own version of the Dilscoop, hereafter known as the Robsthingy). Batman himself, keenly aware of the need to lead by example and get some useful time in the middle, aimed an enormous hairy waft at the third ball he faced and was castled by Captain Yelly for zilch.
But with Sam returning to make a horrible mess of Neil's figures on his way to a superb 70, N-Dogg's Unlucky 13 were left with a tough chase of 193 to win. Wickets for The Doggers went to Somanna and Tom (3 each), JNB and Shashi (2 apiece), Finn (1-21) and Nelly Yelly (1-135 – or something like that, there's a bit of a smudge on the scorebook). Special mention, though, for Muzammel, who bowled eight excellent overs for 20, and was extremely unlucky not to pick up a few wickets.
The less said about the run chase the better, though Vijay (a well-made 17), Shielsy (27) and Somanna (a rapid 22) did their best to make the scoreline respectable. Others, frankly, didn't. Alex claimed 3 wickets with some well-flighted off spin that made good use of the cross-breeze (or, on occasion, cross-gale). Bharat also picked up 3 scalps, as well as demonstrating his innovative “backwards throw from sitting position” in the outfield. Neeraj and Al took 2 wickets apiece to round off excellent all-round performances, and there was a wicket each for Batman and Sam (the latter with an outrageous grubber that cut short a promising innings in its early stages, and really hurt my foot).
With the Yelly Submarines finally bowled out in the 36th over, and the scoreboard showing the unusual score of 99 for 12, it was time to introduce the newcomers to the joys of drinking Tennents in sub-zero temperatures outside the Murrayfield Hotel – the MDAFS equivalent of an ice bath.
Thanks to all who came along and played – it was nice to get to know another good crop of new recruits, many of whom enhanced their chances of selection for the upcoming season. Many apologies to everyone whose names I've misspelled (I blame the scorers), and congratulations to Murrayfield DAFS on sending Murrayfield DAFS home with their tails between their legs.
Enjoy the season!

Ha ha - another top effort from the profanity filter - Rob's new trademark shot is meant to be called the "ROBSP00N", not the "robsthingy". Though in fact, I quite like the alternative too.
Heriots.
