After sitting in my office all day Friday looking at the torrent of water falling from the heavens, I thought to myself, no way is there going to be a game on. But, true to form the Scottish weather turned out glorious on Saturday and we managed to get 92 overs of cricket played.
After deliberating with the Marchmont captain for some time we decided to play some cricket and having lost the toss, MDAFs were sent into bat on what one can only describe as a wicket with the consistency of pudding.
A Deshmukh and P Hawkins got off to a flying start posting 1 run in the first 8 overs due to some very tight bowling from the Marchmont openers and the wicket being the main culprit for any mistakes.
At this point in the day we were thinking that 120 - 140 was going to be defendable and a level headed innings from both A Deshmukh and A Jaffery set the team up for at 141 for 7 after 50. A very satisfying result having batted on this wicket for our full innings.
Unfortunately, the wick dried and favoured tha team batting second, with S Peachey (Captain) getting a number of runs to get his side off to a great start. MDAFs bowlers had a rough time of it trying to extract as much as we could out of the wicket, some good performances by A Venkatesh, S Fergusson and R Sorrell.
Unfortunately, the total was just not enough to keep a Marchmonet side down, reaching the total after 42 overs with 4 wickets to spare.
A valiant effort with the bat from a few players, J Zarkoob plowing a 6 over fine leg with rediculous well time hook shot, A Jaffery and A Deshmukh in the runs and the rest spattered about the other players.
A welcome return for C West behind the stumps after sustaining a shoulder injury and a cracking bowling return to the 1s with R Sorrell.
Dissappointed we could not get a win, but as a team, we are starting to understand that batting the full 50 allows you to get more runs!! Lessons are being learned.
