After a week of poor weather and friendly T20s getting rained off, a sunny (yet bitterley cold) Saturday emerged to give the 1s their first ESCA Div one match against the Grange, at the Grange. An exciting opporunity to play on a very well managed wicket and a fantastic ground for all!
After winning the toss, S Fergusson elected to bowl and a damp, yet hard wicket and push the Grange 2nd XI to try and score runs on a massive boundary. S Fergusson and T Amin opened up with varied success, yours truely getting belted for four of the first ball of the season! T Amin restricting run scoring at the end, proved beneficial as Grange only scored at 2.8 per over without loss of wicket.
2nd change bowlers J Zarkoob and T Wheeler entered the fray with immediate affect, Zarkoob taking the Grange skippers scalp with a ball that can only be described as an absolute pearler of a delivery. T Wheeler picking up the Grange number 2 luring him to try a big shot, missing and bowling him! The Earl of Twirl strikes again. After a relatively slow start at drinks Grange were 66/2 and looked comfortable.
A Venkatesh and K Edrich entered at a time that the batsmen wanted to start hitting the ball an increasing the run rate, both bowling well, with Edrich taking a wicket and still restricting the batsmen to less than 5 an over. M "Big Daddy" Akerkar, the 7th bowler to be used opened his spell with a 2 wicket maiden... perfect death bowling, full, on the toes and very difficult to get away. Pairing Akerkar with Zarkoob and Amin at the other end proved beneficial again, with all three bowlers going for a combined 44 runs in the final 14 overs - astonishing restriction! Grange batting their 50 and getting a reachable but daunting target of 179 for 5.
After a brilliant tea in the club rooms (yes, they have clubrooms and will be shocked on their return trip to Roseburn!!) Opening batsmen A Deshmukh and P Hawkins were sent out to try and put a dent in the total. Lasting 9 overs at less than 2 an over, a slight mis calculation left Deshmukh wider open for an LBW appeal - out! S Fergusson coming in at 1st drop pushed to get bat on ball, but couldnt find it for the first few overs, but the runs kept ticking over at between 2 and 2.5 overs until P Hawkins departed to a rank outside off full toss at 45. A short cameo from A Jaffery, getting out to a great delivery from Patterson, LBW for 11. Then enter M Akerkar. His first run scoring shot a 4 set the tone for his reply to the Granges total. Fergusson and Akerkar putting on a 50 run partnership before Fergusson holes out to mid wicket on 39.
Akerkar scoring at more than 4 an over had decided it was time to start getting the scoreboard up and with 10 overs left, 59 runs to get and 5 wickets in hand, MDAFs needed to get the run rate up over the 5 an over mark to win. J Zarkoob held his wicket for a few overs whilst Akerkar continued to score freely at the other end, before being bowled trying to hit the leather off the ball. A Venkatesh entered for a 15 run score, again whilst Akerkar continued to belt the ball about the park with ease.
MDAFs chasing down the total with 8 balls and 4 wickets to spare and a very please M Akerkar not out on 78.
A cracking effort for the first game of the season. Special mention to some excellent fielding, great athleticism and fast running (something the ones are not used to) from F Ross (a late call up).
A few fielding issues to work on at training, but all in all, thanks for the lads that played, a great way to start the 2012 Season.
UP THE MUFS!
Sam (very happy) Fergusson
