Hello Lads,
After what has seemed an age, all teams managed to get games on Saturday as the weather gods finally pulled finger and gave us a nice day. Following a run of bad form with the bat, general low morale and some poor weather, the MDAFs 1st XI were set a tough task for their final match of the season, up against the 3rd place and in form Watsonians 2nd XI.
Skipper A Mohammad keeping with tradition and losing the toss, Watsons put the MUFs into bat on what one could only describe as a more than slightly squishy wicket. And from their the batting carnage began... for the rest of the day. A Mohammad and A Venkatesh were set a tough task in seeing off the opening bowlers. After M Leggats first over of 3 no balls a wide a wicket and some runs off the bat, MUFs were 8 for 1 off 1... losing Venkatesh on the first ball he faced... Quack.
The runs being hard to come by with EL leaving a mass of clumpy grass clippings everywhere, A Mohammad (24) stayed through the next 3 batsmen, none getting above 5 runs before being dismissed. A few quick runs from S Fergusson (21) and a brilliantly composed innings from A Akram(22) with minor contributions (next highest score of 7 by T Wheeler) from the remaining batters saw the MUFs post 110 all out off 39.4 overs. Hardly what we would consider a defendable total.
After a great tea in the sunshine, MUFs bowlers were set a difficult task in restricting the Watsons batsmen. A Mohammad and S Fergusson (his first spell of the season) doing a great job of keeping Watsons to 26 for 4 inside 12 overs. A Mohammad bowling wicket taking magic and S Fergusson restricting runs at the other end lifted spirits and gave the MUFs the faintest sniff of victory and with tight fielding, some lightening quick wicket keeping (A Mahapatra) Watsons were 55 for 6 at drinks. A loud, chatty and optimistic field of MUFs backed the final bowling attack of A Venkatesh and A Virk, who in turn took 2 wickets a piece to bring the Watsonians team tumbling to 78 all out after 35 overs.
A magic day and a very good way to finish the season for the MUFs 1st XI sitting 6th on a table of 11.
With new players coming through and a good recruitment drive from the whole club over the winter, MUFs 1st XI will be a competitive force in next years ESCA Div 1.
Yours in Cricket.
