Match Report - 1s Away at Grange. or
"How We Got Out Of Jail"
We arrived at Portgower Place full of hope that the game would be played - for some of us this would be our first (and probably only) chance to play a league game at the home of Scottish cricket.
The covers were on and, most interestingly, remained on while the toss took place. Never seen that before! Asif won the toss and chose to bat. As Luke and Adnan(J) walked out, the first of several short, sharp showers came on, but none were bad enough to drive us from the field.
A steady start against some accurate and nippy bowling on a track that was hard and true if a little "sticky" saw the score ticking along nicely and we reached 61 before Luke tried to pull a ball that stayed a little low and was out LBW. This precipitated a mini-collapse as Adnan(A) came and went and Adnan(J) also departed - the latter for a mostly classy 44. Asif and Maggie steadied the ship and took us to drinks at 90 for 3. A little behind the desired rate, but not too shabby and they pressed on to 125 before Maggie fell, chopping one onto his stumps. Enter OMH who watched Asif depart for a healthy 41 to be replaced by Madhu and then Anand, both of whom played valuable cameo innings that upped the run rate. OMH reached 34 before being given out caught behind. That ball nicked pad, and bat also nicked pad, caused the umpire to think one sound was bat on ball....though he did apologise at tea.. ... A late flourish from J-P and Mel took us to a reasonable 210 off our 50 overs. Not too bad, but 30 to 40 short of a good total.
Grange's reply got off to a slow start and with them tottering at 48 for 4 after 14 overs we were in the driving seat. However a stand of 75 between Philip (who had taken 3 for 28 in our innings) and Mullins saw Grange back on top. Despite the welcome return of J-P, we were a bowler light and it was beginning to show - enter SuperMaggie the partnership breaker, who duly had Mullins plumb LBW with his fourth ball. A spirited 40 partnership followed and Grange were now well up with the run rate, helped in no small measure from some astoundingly inept fielding. With Grange on 165 fortunes changed again however, with 3 wickets falling for 2 runs and MUFFS were back in with a sniff. Sensible batting from Philip, supported by number 10 Milne who scored 4 in their 25 run stand took Grange ever closer. Milne eventually went to a screaming catch behind by OMH off Mel. Grange needed 18 to win, we needed one wicket. There were many overs left.....and with Aisf having completed his 10, Maggie returned to the fray. A steady first over (1 run) was followed by five good balls (1 run) and one loose one (4 runs) from Mel and Grange needed just 11 to win.
A well run 2 to deep midwicket off the first ball of what proved to be the last over was followed by a dot ball then a very similar shot. Asif (from Mid on) over-ran the ball and the batsmen turned for 2...Maddam pounced, threw and hit the stumps from fully 50 yards. Batsman out by a yard and the game was ours.
Philip finished on an unbeaten 90 and was an object lesson on how to build an innings and play to your strengths. But should he have had more faith in his number 11 and taken a little more time (of which there was plenty) to reach the finishing line?
Good performances with the bat from Adnan Jaffrey (44), Asif(41), OMH(34), while Adnan(A) bowled some unplayable inswingers in his 3-50 and was well supported by the other bowlers.

Hear hear - brilliant effort boys. Another Mufs first I believe - or have we won at the Grange before in the dim and distant past?
Either way, the result cheered me up no end after 11 hours on trains on Saturday trying to get from Edinburgh to London in time for my cousin's wedding (I didn't, but got there for the drinking afterwards so that's the important thing).

This week the 3's travelled to Preston Pans to take on Preston Village.
We lost the toss and were sent in to bat on a track that was doing plenty with a bit of moisture on the track.
We lost Chris early to a ball that spat off a length to catch his glove on the way through to the keeper. Ashiq made a steady 10 before being bowled and this brought Saad to the crease with Darryn at the other end who typically was dispatching the ball to all parts. Darryn made a well struck 43 before being bowled by ex-muffer Matt Boyd. Saad then progressed with some powerfully struck shots to make an excellent 58. Contributions from both Grahame and Bharat had us at a healthy 168 for 5 before a lower order collapse saw us dismissed for 180, probably 20-40 runs short of a very competitive total.
However with some excellent opening bowling from both Paul and Touqeer with Paul picking up 2 crucial wickets ensured that we kept the squeeze on Preston Village. With the run rate steadily increasing and wickets falling at regular intervals the task was too much for Preston who attempted to hit out with their tailenders and in the end were dismissed for 131. A well fought game and a relatively comfortable victory of 49 runs puts us joint top of Division 5 for the moment. A good team victory with contributions from everyone, lets keep it going! UP THE MUFS!
Scorecard:
Darryn - 43 Chris W - 3 Ashiq - 10 Saad - 58 Grahame - 17 Bharat - 21 Finlay - 1 Raja - 4 n.o Daniel - 0 Paul - 0 Touqeer - 3
Touqeer: 7.1-2-24-1 Paul: 7-2-23-2 Finaly: 6-0-18-1 Bharat: 9-3-15-2 Daniel: 9-1-33-1 Raja: 5-0-15-1

This week 4s were the solitary team to play at home. The clash was for the Top of the table supremacy, with us taking on joint table leaders Drummond Trinity 2s. With weather Gods going with another windy and soggy day, Mufs 4s captain Don wilkie won the toss(yet again) and decided to bat first in a weather unfavourable for batsmen( actually its part of his game plan devised in early 1900s, win toss and bat first, no matter what), Rain delaying the start for some time, but finally sky cleared and off we were, but just 2 overs into the game and rain again graced us with its presence accompanied by wind ( and a cheering/noisy crowd at Murrayfield rugby stadium )made it difficult to bat on a muddy and slippery track, cautious start by openers Mouris and Nick saw us score at a run rate of 1.50 per hour for sometime untill Nick was bowled by S Khan for 3 which came after having been there for more than 9 overs, Chris and Mouris departed soon in successive overs with score being 38 of 16 overs, bringing Sam into the field, some really good shots by him upped the run rate but with no support from other end where no one reached double digits saw us 90/8 with more than 13 overs to go, but a fine partnership of 40 runs between sam and prince with major contributor being sam who scored almost all the runs saw us score a modest 134. all out of 31 overs Bowlers started on a mixed note taking 3 early wickets but also giving away enough runs with DTs wicket keeper keith smashing some balls to the fence and getting a quick 50,in a team score of just 60, An excellent bowling spell from Brad Mowatt saw DTs 77 for 7 and match seemed all done for them, but patient and defensive batting from DTs John M and T Turpie saw them home with an unbeaten partnership of 61,which was also possible cause of a good help from some seriously bad fielding and not so good fielding placements from MUFS,which saw us dropping few easy catches and missing some run outs.. And the unbroken winning streak of MUFS 4 came to a sad end. But Hopefully we will bounce back and reclaim the top spot again..
Batting Card Mouris B 26 Nick H 3 Chris 6 Sam C 72 B Mowatt 2 Vinod K 3 B Falconer 0 A Mirza 1 D wilkie 0 Gurmeet S 4 Chris B 0*
Bowling Figures not available. Wickets were shared by Gurmeet singh who took 2, Sam and Amir 1 and Brad 3..
Congrats 1s and 3s for that well deserved wins and hard luck to 2s...
