I was asked on Monday where we stand in relation to non-organised cricket, or other games, being played on the grass square.
Legally, we have no "right" to stop others. However, we (and the council team) do put a lot of time, effort and money into maintaining the square for the benefit of those who book pitches and pay for them. If any club members see people kicking a football about on the square, or taking part in other activity, I would ask that they gently ask them to play elsewhere in the park. Most will comply willingly enough.
Anyone hitting golf balls onto or (more seriously from) the square - as has happened already this year - should be given shorter shrift. An approach of asking how they would feel if their greens where they play golf were used for wedge practice has worked in the past; but a photo record of such miscreants would be useful for those with cameras on their phones.
There is also a known group who play cricket in the park, usually (but not always) on Sundays. They have been "removed" from the square several times in the past and, so far this season, have been seen playing on the astro. As they are likely to cause more damage to our pitches, I would urge members to be a little more robust with this group.
If any members see organised games taking place that they think may not be genuine, but are reluctant to approach those involved, or if you have approached them and feel threatened, please phone me or a Committee member, or phone Edinburgh Leisure (0131 669 0404) and report the miscreants.
Cheers
