No scorebook to hand, but that shouldn't significantly affect the accuracy of the match report...
Murrayfield DAFS IX 148 for 5 (18 overs) Woodcutters VII (+ II) 110ish all out (17.something overs)
Rain subsided just in time to allow a soggy but entertaining evening's cricket at Roseburn on Tuesday. A depleted Woodcutters squad turned up with only 7 players after late call-offs/failure to turn up (we feel their pain), so after winning the toss and electing to bat, skipper Wheeler and Agent Paul Leonard (the newly crowned Anna Chapman of the Mufs, though perhaps not so much of a looker...or millionairess...) turned coat and turned out for the visitors.
After a flying start from Bharat and Madhu (25 retired in about 2 overs), Agent Paul was thrown the ball and cleverly hoodwinked his new team-mates into thinking he was on their side by dismissing Bharat with his legendarily cunning subterranean long hop, then claiming the scalp of Dan after a few lusty blows to an excellent catch by Campbell. At the time Tom looked more like the secret agent than Paul, having dropped Bharat at long off, right in front of the watching Mufs - several of whom were able to confirm to the visitors that Tom shelling a catch was not an entirely unknown occurrence.
Sutha and Norm then made hay while the sun failed to shine, both reaching 25 in quick time and retiring, and some mighty smites from The Fotherator (19*) left Mufs in a very strong position going into the last couple of overs. But then enter - and immediately exit - Luke and replacement skipper Anand to the wily bowling of Phil Neaves. Phil is familiar to some of us from bringing his son(s?) along to our Friday youth training sessions, but he showed no mercy to the adult Muffers in despatching the distinctly flimsy-looking lower order...
After negotiating (i.e. lamping) the hat-trick ball, Sam larruped a few more to take the final score to a daunting 148, and Woodcutters weren't helped by the run out of opener Atherton (honestly) without facing a ball. Which at least left Luke and Anand feeling slightly better about their first-ballers. But then Scott hit Sam all over Roseburn in a rapid 22, supported by Campbell (25 retired), and Woodcutters stayed up with the run rate for a while in spite of Wheeler's arrival at number 4. On seeing Tom joined at the crease by Agent Paul, the fielding side quickly realised that keeping these two at the crease would be their key to victory. Sure enough, the run rate began to drop, despite the distinctly unusual sight of Tom advancing down the pitch to deposit a six over long on off Dan. (Willie happened not to be watching at the time, and I suspect he still doesn't really believe it happened...)
When Tom finally skied one back to bowler Bharat for 24, Agent Paul came into his own, successfully seeing off two of his batting partners through his ingenious brand of silent calling and running. Realising he might be in danger of blowing his cover, Paul then astonished all those present - none more so than himself - by hoisting Madhu over straight midwicket for a glorious six (his first in 15 years, I'm reliably informed). Quickly returning to the task in hand, he careered down the wicket and was well stumped by Sutha, leaving the returning Campbell with too much to do to save the day for the visitors. So Agent Paul's mission ended in success, with Mufs winning by something in the territory of 40 runs.
What Woodcutters lacked in numbers they more than made up for in good cheer and lager consumption, and an enjoyable few pints in the Murrayfield capped off a thoroughly entertaining evening. Looking forward to renewing acquaintances next year.
