Murrayfield DAFS 1st XI 222 for 9 (Asif Mohammed 57, Mangesh Akerkar 44, Rahul Patel 2-40, Cammy Lawson 2-46)
Leith FAB 1st XI 93 all out (Nathan D1cks 28, Rahul Patel 25, Tom Wheeler 3-19, Kashif Ashraf 2-16, Melvyn Clench 2-25)
Comfortable victory in the end after we were reduced to 9 for 2 in the opening overs on a slow but largely true pitch - groundsman Hubbard was one of the few to be undone by a dodgy bounce...
Asif (57) and Luke (27) got things back in order, with a combination of sound defence, powerful attack and sharp running. Mangesh (44) and entertaining cameos from debutant Sam Fergusson (18, including a 6 to get off the mark...) and Raj D (26*) saw us to 222, which was always likely to be enough in the conditions. Top wicket takers for Leith FAB were Cammy Lawson and Rahul Patel with two apiece.
Two early wickets for Melv (2-25) had the visitors struggling at 31 for 2, and it could have been worse for them if we'd held our catches. Raj D (1-8) gave visiting captain Nettleton a tough time before finding the outside edge in an increasingly hostile spell, then the spinners Tom (3-19) and Asif (1-13) put the squeeze on the Leith middle order. At 77 for 7 it was as good as over, but after a period of resistance from D1cks (28) and Manoharan, it was left to debutants Sam (1-10) and Kashif (2-16) to finish the job, with Kashif finishing off the innings from successive balls.
Very good spirit from both teams all day despite the cold - helped (?) by well-oiled rugby league fans adopting our visitors, and fellow Wakefield man Nathan D1cks in particular, as their own.
All in all a very satisfying start for the 1s and for new skipper Maggy. Well done all - 18 weeks of this please!
Cheers Tom

Forgot about the profanity filter there - Nathan D1cks became Nathan Thingys when I posted that - now corrected...

Murrayfield DAFS 3rd XI 127 all out (Vishwak 26, Cordner 6-31)
Stirling County 3rd XI 131-9 (44, Patterson 5-31, Bharat 3-18)
So my first game in charge as a MUFS captain and it has to be said that it was a very entertaining start despite the result. Having lost the toss and then being asked to bat we started off relatively well with Darryn hitting a quickfire 21 off 8 balls before having his stumps scattered all over the place to a pretty ordinary ball. Unfortunately the trend of getting out to ordinary balling seemed to haunt us throughout our innings. Many of us were guilty of getting ourselves in and then out to quite average bowling (myself included). Vishwak hit a good looking 26 and Bharat a nice 20 but unfortunately neither could go on from these starts. Jonathon Jenner made a nice 21 N.O. and was well supported by Patterson and Leonard at the end to try and use up our alloted overs. Unfortunately this was not to be and we ended up being 127 all out.
With the bowling attack we had i was confident we could get a result despite the relatively low total. The opening spells from Patterson and Jenner were excellent with Patterson taking 4 early wickets to leave county 20-4. Jenner bowled excellently throughout his spell and was extremely unlucky not to take a wicket. Carswell (county's number 3) was extremely fortunate during this period on numerous occasions with edges through the slips, inside edges past the stumps and a drop catch.
When Patterson had taken the wicket of county's captain to leave then 56-5 we really sniffed victory. However with new batsmen Cordner and the fortunate Carswell at the crease county managed to get their total up to 98-5. This was when the highly impressive Bharat finally got the breakthrough in his fifth over. Cleaning Carswell up with a beauty to leave them 98-6. Cordner soon followed LBW to Bharat and then an excellent one handed catch from Raj R put us right on top leaving county 102-8.
Bharat continued his excellent spell and ended up with 3-18 off his 9 and Vishwak bowled 6 overs for 19, which deserved more reward. So with the score now at the 115-8 on came Leonard who as cool as a cucumber preceded to bowl a wicket maiden and reduce county to 115-9 with a lovely LBW which was about as plum as you get despite their batsmen protest.
However despite some disciplined and luckless bowling from Leonard and Raj R county had two experienced players left at the crease who managed to guide them home. They did have a wobble with 8 to win when number 11 skying one to mid off but unfortunately we were not able to hang onto the catch. So with an edge through slip for 4 to win them the game county managed the victory.
This was an excellent display of bowling from the team, particularly from Patterson and Bharat. The spirit shown by all the guys right up until the end was brilliant. With a few improvements to our batting and fielding i am confident we can have a good season in Div 5!
