Bit misleading that as I'm playing for the seconds, but I've already notched up some 'memorable' personal firsts in my short Aussie career. Thought one or two of you might be interested in my experience so far (or maybe not...).
I'm playing for QUT, which stands for Queensland University of Technology. However I think there about as many links with the uni as DAFS had with the long defunct - or at least renamed several times - ag and fish department.
My debut saw my first golden duck down under - lbw as usual. My first over was my only one, because the final wicket fell shortly after. It also saw my first wild full toss (the loosener!).
My second game was probably unique for me as I didn't bat or bowl. We skittled them for 120-odd and our fourth wicket partnership knocked off the runs before the number six (me) could get a look in.
My third fixture saw my first wicket! A nice inswinging clean bowled with my third delivery. This game also saw my first run - a single clipped off my legs off my first ball that settled my nerves after the earlier horror show. Was feeling quite settled a few runs later when another first: a harsh decision from the neutral umpire. Leg before again of course, but this time adjudged to be very high by everyone who was daft enough to listen to my moaning.
And then on Saturday my first maiden and my first 'that's got to be out' lbw shout (unsuccessful, outside the line but only just according to the kindly ump). And then a first of any kind. Replaced in the attack by the skipper, who fields at first slip, I hesitantly took up his place. His first ball was edged and I clung on at the second attempt. As I field there so rarely, I don't think I have ever taken a slip catch in a match!
We lost badly but hopefully some more firsts to report next week: my first foray into double figures maybe?
Hope you enjoyed the report as you prepare for your first net of the season. Cricket apart, things are going well in Oz.
Cheers
