So the great escape is still on as 1s go to the last game of the season against already relegated Heriots 2s at Goldenacre. As noted elsewhere, the equation is pretty simple - win, and we'll stay up if either Watsonians or Largo lose (or are rained off). Heriots in improving form though so the following 11 brave warriors will need to be at their best: 1. Tom Wheeler 2. Ian Shiels 3. Paul Hubbard 4. Raja Sampath 5. Melvyn Clench 6. Phil Rogers 7. Adam Scott 8. Luke Hayes 9. Mangesh Akerkar 10. Raj Devanagere 11. Jean Pierre Cruz Rocha As you may have read elsewhere, this is Phildo's swansong as he prepares to move to Australia, where at the very least he'll enjoy the next 18 months until we inevitably hand back the Ashes in the now-traditional manner... If you haven't already seen it, here's Phil's cordial invitation to Muffers past and present to join him for some farewell drinks. mufs.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=socials&action=display&thread=380Hope to see lots of you out there to toast Phil's terrific contribution to the club on and off the field over 12 seasons, as well as the efforts of all our teams throughout this summer. Cheers and good luck all Tom

The two's are now definately staying put in Division 3 for next season.
the last game of the season, is a game to show that we are really capable of not just playing Division 3 cricket but can play hard to win our games. Although we are playing bottom of the league Preston this week, there is no reason to let our heads down. a convincing win should be the best cherry to have and will make the evening celebrations even better...
the team this week is:
Chris West, Danny Abraham Rajnish Singh Sivaram Sivasamy Jigar Patel Vimal D'Souza Anand Venkatesh Rafic Settu Adeel Raza Lindsay Towns Ankeet Vora.
We meet at Roseburn by 1200 noon.
goodluck to all the teams.
Up the MUFS...

As many will already know, a fine victory for the 1s at Goldenacre (a first for a few of us) wasn't enough to climb out of the relegation zone as Largo and Watsons both won convincingly.
Our game was abandoned after 30 overs of our innings after rain (about 3 droplets thereof) caused Heriots to decide to pack up and go home with us 80 for 4 chasing 100 to win. So a slightly hollow victory was ours on run rate - all the more hollow once Watsonians' victory over Holy Cross confirmed our second bottom finish.
As for the game itself, outstanding bowling and fielding from everyone was backed up with excellent and calm batting from Hubbs (27) and Maggy (31*). After an early wobble, we were coasting to victory when the home side decided they'd had enough.
Our survival hopes now rest on Fauldhouse, who just managed the 5 points they needed against Accies to pip them to the title. If Fauldhouse are successful in their pursuit of a National League place (and their facilities etc have been confirmed as OK for National League, so all depends on play-offs v Kelburne and possibly one other team) then that should mean only one team (Heriots) relegated from Div 1.
But if that doesn't happen, we can console ourselves in the knowledge that we gave it everything we could over the last few games. To go down with 6 wins and nearly 63% overall record would be harsh, but would reflect how we underperformed in the earlier part of the season. An extremely successful season in the 20/20 format (two Cow Corner trophies and narrowly missing out in the Parks final) doesn't feel like much consolation just now, but it does show we can compete with the top teams in the East and will do so again. Whether that's next season or not remains to be seen.
As skipper I'd like to thank everyone for their efforts all year and hope that, whether it's in div 1 or div 2, everyone will be back next season to show what we're really capable of.
Everyone, that is, with the highly honourable exception of Phildo, who in a few weeks' time will be in Brisbane with Cath to start their new life Down Under. Saturday night was a suitably fine send-off for them both, with many pints sunk in Berts, a few more in the delightful Rat Pack (if you've never been, imagine Fingers with higher ceilings and an even stickier floor...), and several players sporting comedy goatees and sideburns in tribute to our departing friend and team mate. And it was nice for Phildo to round off his time at the club with a win and a couple of crucial wickets.
Saturday evening was also a reminder about all that's great about this cricket club. Dozens of thoroughly sound people from all parts of the world and all walks of life enjoying each others' company over a few beers and tons of laughs. Once all's said and done, that's what this club is about.
Lastly, thanks to all those whose hard work continues to support the continued development of the club, on and off the field. Too many to mention them all individually, but in particular, cheers to my fellow skippers, who once again managed to make sure we fulfilled all our fixtures and were competitive in all but a few games (at all levels!). Huge thanks to Groundsman/Treasurer/Cow Corner skipper Hubbs, whose work on the Roseburn square throughout the year was greatly appreciated and ensured we were able to complete a number of fixtures that would never have been able to go ahead back at Muirhouse. More volunteers needed on the grounds-keeping front for this winter and future seasons - see a separate thread...
El Presidente continues to do tons of valuable work, largely behind the scenes (he's never been one to blow his own trumpet), and he continues to drive the armoury project forward. El Secretario has put in zillions of hours this year on secretary and youth development duties - always greatly appreciated. And last but absolutely not least - Ian Shiels, 1s vice captain, midweek organiser/skipper, webmaster extraordinaire, and the man (with great help from Iain M and others) who has managed to develop a cracking youth setup at the club from absolutely nothing. The man's a legend, and a worthy inaugural winner of the "Phildo Claypole Rogers Knackered Old Bat Award" (possibly not the official title) for all round contribution to the club since Murrayfield and DAFS first joined forces. I can't really imagine what the club would be like if it wasn't for Ian. But it's pretty safe to say it wouldn't be a patch on what it is now. Which, in case you were wondering, is a d**n fine community cricket club.
I'm off to lie down for the next four or five months. Hope to catch plenty of you through the winter for nets, bevvies and general laugh and carry on.
Cheers all
Tom

As someone who has had to sit the season out owing to injury, a view from beyond the boundary.
Whilst the 1sts finish is disappointing we have done well in so many other ways.
Tom is right about the work of el Presidente, Ian and Paul. They all deserve a lot of credit for moving the club forward in many ways.
Developing Roseburn has moved forward and the colts set up is starting to produce youngsters already who have featured in the 4s.
What we now have to try and do is to spread the load between people just a wee bit more.
The future can be very bright if we build on a lot of what has been done this year

Hard luck for team 1 on going down albeit fighting. although i would say all the best to Fauldhouse....and keep fingers crossed. Team 2 saw Danny score a fantastic ton with 4 huge sixes in his 106. we ended up on 229 / 9 off 50 overs. with Adeel scoring an unbeaten 25 being the next best individual score. The bowlers restricted PReston Village for 175 / 6 of the 50 overs with 3 wickets for Anand V from his 8. Rajnish took 1 and finished the season with 26 wickets which (awaiting final confirmation) is the second highest wickets tally in the league. (Musselburgh confirmed that their opener took 27 total) this has however been no mean feat. Congrats to you sir. Jigar, in his last game for the club also took 1 wicket, a fine stumping from Westy. (Although Vimal owes Jigar a pint for not allowing him two wickets...dropping a catch that even Melinda could have taken... ) OVerall i would like to say a big thanks to al who have played with / for the club this season. i have certainly enjoyed captaining the team 2 and look forward to seeing you all in the next season. a few players are leaving these shores for settling abroad / returning back home and would like to wish them all the very best for the future. besides Phil R, Jigar Patel and Sivaram Sivasamy who are both returning back home after having finished their studies here. Sunny D had also mentioned about retuning back, but am unsure what is his final plan. nonetheless i would like to wish you all the very best and hope to see you someday with a touring side (i know Siva is already planning for one.) I would also like to say a big thanks to Paul and Don for the pitches. This has certainly been the best of Roseburn in the last 5 years i have played here. Also to Iain M for managing the various things as the secretary and also for the youth setup. i know i am repeating the words of Tom above, but would like to say a very big thanks to Ian Shielsy for all the efforts he puts in to the development of the club. Your efforts are well appreciated. while i am on this, as some / most of you may be aware, i am getting married this december in Mumbai. and would love to see all of you there if not atleast a few of you there. till the next time, cheers and happy winters. Thanks for the kind words. And would like to add my thanks to the skippers and all others involved in the running of the club. That we field 4 teams every saturday is a fantastic achievement for a club like ours. Although, fingers crossed, fauldhouse may yet save our div 1 skins, if the worse does happen we can hold our heads with pride over how we battled to the end. Nevertheless the club is on an upward path with ground and facilities improvements and the juniors. Regarding the latter, this has been most rewarding, and my thanks to Iain, Lea, Neil C, Neil Y, Henry and Drew and others who have helped out. There is funding available for UKCC level 1 courses so if interested in coaching then please get in touch. For those who return abroad i hope your Mufs experience has been most rewarding - to Phil and Cath all the best in Oz and we'll see you there for the next Ashes. Cheers all, Mr Belly.

Bad news from the National League play-off - Kelburne beat Fauldhouse by about 60 runs - and so this means 2 down through the East League and thus Mufs Ones are relegated to Division 2.
Need to dust ourselves down and come back next year utterly determined to bounce back. Up the Mufs.

A real shame, especially after our efforts in the final three games. I'm sure the 1s will bounce back quickly with a table topping finish next season.
We left Edinburgh over a week ago now and are saying our south coast goodbyes before our departure. Many thanks for all your kind words, best wishes, one-legged dancing at the Rat Pack, goatee growing and shirt signing. It was a fantastic send-off, up there with other legendary MUFS nights out.
This is a brilliant club and I will be keeping in touch from afar.
Up the MUFS
Cheers

Cheers Dino (not used that one for a while)!
Will post up some photos of the eve up soon!
To cheer us up ever so slightly... Heriots Ones lost their play-off too on Sat so all 3 Heriots teams got relegated in the same season! A triple whammy!
