MUFS beat Badgers in Nail biter![/size]
Thursday night saw an eclectic mix of Mufs take on the Badgers of Kirkbrae in a 20/20 friendly at a murky Muirhouse.
Losing the toss the Mufs were asked to field and made early inroads into the Kirkbrae order with Peaches Sneddon taking a wicket in his opening spell as well as a run out created by some fine fielding from Frothy Fotheringham.
The Donimator came into the attack taking two wickets and suffering two dropped catches (although full credit to Chris D for getting in the way of a howitzer of a shot!) while at the other end Paul was savaged by Captain Badger (Kieron Blake) who rapidly reached the retirement figure of 25.
The next bowling change saw Vesty on in tandem with Rob “Wozza” Fotheringham, with Muirhouse soon treated to a (half-hearted!) “robot” celebration as Rob bagged a wicket. Sandeep and Chris D brought the innings to a close with the Badgers massing exactly 100 from their 20 overs.
Some aggressive early running got the Mufs underway until Charlotte, mesmerised by the (in)famous Ward reverse sweep, hesitated in the run and found herself fractions short. This brought the skipper to the wicket where he proceeded to reinforce the resemblance to Michael Vaughn with some exquisite ODI defensive play and some sublime playing and missing.
A flurry of wickets then ensued, first Wardy bowled and then Sandeep skying a pull shot which was safely pouched by Captain Badger despite Chris D’s, on the field as a sub fielder, best efforts to put him off. Chris “Mario” Banks introduction steadied the ship for a while and the run rate increased with some fine shots over the infielders before Cookie missed a straight one to depart for 4 (thanks go to Dion as 2 of these were definitely byes!).
As the rain and the darkness descended Jigar then turned the game in Mufs favour scoring a rapid 27* ably assisted by Chris D who had replaced Mr Banks. Jigar’s retirement sparked Rob into action and together with Chris they maintained the momentum until Rob was caught and the game twisted back with all to play for.
Rob’s departure brought Don to the crease with the Mufs still needing 20 runs from 2 overs. The combination of good placement and good running whittled this down to 2 needed from 3 balls and with Chris (17*) slapping the ball behind point the winning runs were scored with 2 balls to spare.
Despite half the innings being played in the rain we clearly benefited from the best of the conditions, the badgers struggled* with the wet ball and the increasingly slippery outfield, whilst batting became slightly easier as the uneven bounce disappeared the wetter it got. Thanks go to Kirkbrae for an enjoyable if a little damp game and we look forward to the return fixture later in the summer.
* No badgers were harmed in the playing of this cricket match

One correction - 20 runs were needed from the final two overs, with Don at the crease! If only the Badgers knew how unlikely a victory this was.
Trouble at t'sett...
